“Cortejo Fúnebre” - Unedited
From Paris, on 14th May 1913 , Mário de Sá-Carneiro writes to Fernando Pessoa (at the time in Lisbon), on a sheet of paper from the “Café Riche”.
Das três poesias que me envia, destaco como soberba o “Cortejo Fúnebre”. É cheia de maravilhas e sem uma única quebra… […] Digo-lhe mesmo que dos seus versos, este “Cortejo Fúnebre” é uma das composições que eu mais estimo, que mais sinto.
From the three poems you send me, I’d like to enhance as superb the “Cortejo Fúnebre” [”Funeral March”]. It is full of wonders, and lacks a single break… […] I’d dare to say that, from all your verses, this “Cortejo Fúnebre” is one of the compositions i esteem most, and i feel most.
Sá-Carneiro, then, cites seven verses from the poem. According to the book “Cartas de Mário Sá-Carneiro a Fernando Pessoa”, the whole “Cortejo Fúnebre” remains unedited. Only a small glimpse of it can be seen:
Tenho uma auréola de névoa em meu olhar
(Dobra a finados sem sinos
Nos meus ócios peregrinos)
Passam asas de soslaio na minha atenção
Um invisível bafo falha um beijo
(Lá vai lento e lento o enterro
Do que eu tinha áureo no erro)
The complete works of Pessoa are present at the national library, in Lisbon. I don’t know what is required to consult it, but I believe the world would be grateful if “Cortejo Fùnebre” could be revealed, at last.
