Apple displayed an ASCII Quicktime movie player at WWDC 2002 or 2003. You’ve never heard nerds cheer so loud. I think I may have burnt it to CD just as it was such an amazing technological break through.

You can actually play a video file as ascii characters with mplayer. There’s a built-in ascii output plugin :).
